In a digital world where zoom, slack, and google meeting became the new forms of communication, a book about visual leadership will push us a little further into the future—in the right direction.
As a young kid growing up in Queens, New York, Todd Cherches knew he wanted to work in the TV business. After college, he moved to the west coast to pursue his dreams, and in a few years was sent to China to oversee projects for a production company he was working for at the time. He didn’t speak any Chinese and realized that if he couldn’t communicate in words, maybe he could communicate in pictures.
“When we use visual image, it gets people to focus and pay attention. A picture is a good way to increase understanding. And leadership is about vision, is about seeing possibilities, idealizing a goal”, Cherches explained.
Without any words, the power of visual thinking allows you to think in pictures, imagining, and visualizing in our minds possibilities that may not be visible to the physical eye. Imagine you have an idea in your head, and how can you frame this idea in pictures so that another person can say “Oh, I see what you’re saying.”
“Getting people to actually see what we’re saying is the foundation to all kinds of communication”, said Cherches.
In his first book, Visual Leadership: Leveraging the Power of Visual Thinking In Leadership and in Life, Cherches focuses on the art and science of applying visual thinking and visual communication tools, tips, and techniques, in order to turn our vision into reality. If a picture is worth a thousand words, and finding the right words takes time, and time is money, then wouldn’t it follow that business leaders could make more money—in less time—if they simply took a more “visual” approach to how they manage and lead?
Okay, it’s not quite that simple…but Visual Leadership will forever change the way we think and communicate by showing how we can quickly and easily leverage the power of visual imagery, mental models, metaphor, analogy, storytelling, and humor to help us take our game to a whole new level.
“If you can see the invisible, you can inspire people to do the impossible.” Todd Cherches
Words to dream of…. and visualize.
